At Cowlicks & Pigtails, we believe that play facilitates learning. Play clarifies concepts, provides emotional relief and creates delight. Through a hands-on approach, children will be encouraged to participate in a variety of learning experiences that will instill the desire to form their own decisions and learn through open-ended as well as structured activities. Our Educators provide opportunities for children to be active participants in play and to thereby develop the social-emotional, physical, language/literacy and cognitive skills.
Each child who comes to Cowlicks & Pigtails is a unique person with an individual personality. We acknowledge that every child is different in a special way. First and foremost, we focus on the development of strong social-emotional skills, because we know that they are the foundation upon which all our children's future success lies. We foster this development by building relationships amongst children and adults through warm, respectful communication. We strive to help each child develop a positive self-image and a strong sense of self-esteem.
Our Educators get to know the individual needs, skills and interests of the children in our classrooms, allowing us to tailor our curriculum planning to best meet our children's needs!
Fine motor skills, the ability to both identify and control small objects with one's hands, are critical for many tasks such as writing, drawing, picking up dropped Cheerios and finding pennies in your pocket. We support the development of fine motor skills by providing hands on experiences such as drawing, painting, cutting and using stickers, and sensory experiences such as playing with finger paint, sand and water.
Large motor skills, the ability to control and successfully utilize one's larger muscles, are vital to many experiences children will have in their future, both in and out of school, such as playing on the playground, participating in sports, riding a bicycle, and sitting at a desk. We provide opportunities for children to develop these skills by running, jumping, climbing, dancing and hanging from the monkey bars...
Our Educators post weekly lesson plans in our classrooms and in our communications app so that families always know what we are studying!
At Cowlicks & Pigtails, we recognize the opportunity to develop math skills through play. Children learn by counting the people and items they come in contact with throughout their days - blocks, each other, the number of chairs at the table... We also teach numbers by singing songs, doing puzzles and reading books with numbers in them.
The world is filled with opportunities for exploration and the development of scientific knowledge. At Cowlicks & Pigtails, children learn about science throughout our days, including through gardening, cooking, mixing colors, utilizing developmentally appropriate technology, observing the changes of the seasons and the growth of our plants. We know that the world is theirs to discover, and we provide our children with the opportunities to do so.
One of the key aspects of cognitive development is the ability to analyze and solve problems. Children learn these skills through play as they solve puzzles, figure out how to make their block tower stand, negotiate with their peers and experiment with different materials. At Cowlicks & Pigtails, we encourage our children to ask questions, and to help discover the answers themselves.
We follow school wide themes that are multi-cultural, inclusive, engaging, tailored to the different developmental levels of each group and coordinated by our Curriculum Specialist.
Young children develop language skills at a remarkable rate and we provide opportunities to help them do so. We facilitate the growth of spoken language through speaking with the children and through actively encouraging them to speak with each other. We ask for their opinions, model patterns of conversation, ask them questions, and utilize descriptive language to help them begin to label items and feelings.
We foster a love of reading and a familiarity with the alphabet at a developmentally appropriate level. We encourage the development of literacy skills through reading to children regularly, and through making books and the discussion of books an important part of their daily experience.
